After sugar, water and salt, the 4th most common ingredient on food labels is: natural flavoring. What the heck is it, and why is it in my $3.00 Starbucks Teavana Tea??
Well I love Starbucks. There’s a distinctly different vibe from getting your coffee/tea at SB versus a Dunkin’ Donuts or even a Tim Horton’s. You feel accomplished walking out of a Starbucks, right? It’s like you worked hard for the $3.00 tea or $5.00 coffee. “Damn, I deserve this,” I think to myself.
Then I read the ingredient list for their Teavana Teas. Escalante!
I’m a Registered Holistic Nutritionist (R.H.N) and I was still shocked. There’s nothing natural about “natural flavoring.” They don’t disclose the full ingredients because it wouldn’t fit on the package, it would scare consumers off and its proprietary (they don’t want to give away their flavoring secrets to the competition.)
The only difference between “natural” and artificial flavoring is that “artificial” is entirely made in a lab, while “natural” has a compound found in nature. So, they take something natural, extract it, tinker with it in the lab and then inject it back into the food. Technically, natural right?
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) states that there are anywhere from 50-100 ingredients that make up “natural” or “artificial flavoring.” You might want to re-read that sentence again. That’s an additional 50+ ingredients you’re ingesting when you take in these things.
If you want to make sure you’re not consuming these ingredients, you’ve got to stay away from anything “flavored (natural or artificial)….say goodbye to Pineapple Tea…your choices are Basic Green Tea, Earl Grey or Black Tea. That’s it.
